There’s nothing quite like drifting down a river on a sunny day — but showing up unprepared can turn a great float into a rough one fast. Before you launch, run through this checklist to make sure you’ve got everything you need for a safe, fun, and stress-free day on the water.

  • Sunscreen — Waterproof SPF 50+ is your best friend out there. Reapply often; the water reflects UV rays and you’ll burn faster than you think.
  • Water & snacks — Stay hydrated and fueled. Pack more water than you think you’ll need, especially on hot days.
  • Life jackets — A properly fitted PFD for every person in your group, no exceptions. Safety first, always.
  • Waterproof bags — Dry bags or waterproof cases keep your phone, keys, and valuables safe from splashes and unexpected dips.
  • Proper footwear — Water shoes or sandals with straps that won’t float away. Bare feet on rocky riverbeds are a bad time.
  • Sunglasses with a strap — Polarized lenses cut the glare, and a strap means they stay on your face instead of sinking to the bottom.
  • River map or route knowledge — Know where you’re putting in, where you’re taking out, and any hazards in between. A quick scout or downloaded map goes a long way.
  • Trash bags — Leave no trace. Pack out everything you bring in and keep the river beautiful for everyone who comes after you.

Now that you’re all checked off, get out there and make some memories — the river is waiting for you!
